In Ragusa province, in Italy, thousands of Romanian women who work in agriculture suffer serious labour and sexual exploitation. These women have become slaves, they are raped and blackmailed to have sex with their employers. They work 12 hours per day in extreme heat conditions, with no water, isolated, being forced to live in degrading and unsanitary environments. In most cases, their wages are not paid. They are beaten, threatened with weapons, with losing their jobs, with menaces on the safety of their children and family. Some of these women get pregnant with their rapists and are forced to either abandon their children in maternity or to make an abortion. Farmers organize sex parties in which employers offer to each other their employees, for sexual exploitation. When they manage to see a doctor, Romanian women are often accompanied by men, mostly Italians, who speak on their behalf and who do not leave them alone with the doctor.
The Guardian Newspaper recently documented the abuse that Romanian farm workers endure in Ragusa.Adauga un comentariu
