On March 8th, the International Day of Women's Rights, we are protesting against an institution that is misogynistic, homophobic and greedy!

We have chosen to rally in front of the People’s Salvation Cathedral  to show our revolt against the discrimination promoted by the Romanian Orthodox Church (BOR) and the allocation of public funds to the Church, to the detriment of welfare and social protection services financing. Negligent and complicit governments, stop giving money to the BOR!

Women are equal to men in all areas - that’s what the law says. But the Church ranks men as superior to women - within the family, within society, and within its own internal hierarchy. Misogynistic clergy, stop preaching to us how to live our lives!

All citizens are equal before the law - that’s what the Constitution says. But the Church denies same-sex couples the right to be a family through civil partnership or equal marriage. Transphobic and homophobic priests, our love is none of your business!

Young people have the right to education about reproductive and sexual health, but the Church strongly opposes the introduction of sex education in schools, the access of young people to information about their bodies. The Church says that the large number of teenage pregnancies is the fault of Roma girls only because they have “too many” children. Church leaders, let young people learn about their bodies!

Women, regardless of class, ethnicity, religion or geographical location, are entitled to free, safe and accessible pregnancy terminations, but the Church says abortion is a crime and discourages contraceptive use. The Patriarch offers medals to gynecologists who deny women access to pregnancy interruptions in public hospitals. Men in frocks, our decisions about abortion, contraceptives and tampons don’t concern you!

Women have the right to a family life free from violence, but church leaders say that “what happens in the family should stay within the family”, and that the woman “has to bear her cross” and “obey the man”. These types of messages are obstacles preventing women from leaving abusive relationships.

Romania is among the poorest countries in the EU, with millions of people migrating to other countries in search of decent wages, but the Church does not shy away from demanding money from the poor and the state to build a Cathedral that has already swallowed hundreds of millions of euros.

The Parliament, the Ministry of Education, and many mayors and public institutions have been complicit in Church actions that trample people’s rights and freedoms. Enough is enough!

We believe in the freedom of thought, of conscience and of religion, as a fundamental right of Christians and anyone who chooses to express their beliefs or not. Through this protest, we are criticizing the actions of the Romanian Orthodox Church as an institution. An institution that violates the principles of the rule of law, the fundamental rights and freedoms of women, LGBTQ+ people and other minorities, and that puts its own interests ahead of the needs of marginalized and poor people.

De Ziua Internațională a Drepturilor Femeilor manifestăm împotriva unei instituții misogine, homofobe și lacome.

Dorim să tragem un semnal de alarmă privind presiunea exercitată de Biserică în spațiul public și politic, care blochează multe încercări de reformă pentru sănătatea reproducerii, accesul la avort sau predarea noțiunilor de educație sexuală în școli.

Ne arătăm revolta față de discriminările promovate de BOR și față de alocarea de fonduri din bugetele publice către Biserică, în detrimentul finanțării serviciilor de asistență și protecție socială. Stat complice și delăsător, nu mai da bani cu nemiluita la BOR! 

Femeile sunt egale cu bărbații, în toate domeniile - spune legea. Dar Biserica pune în plan superior bărbatul și în plan secundar femeia - în familie, în spațiul public și în propria ierarhie internă. Cler misogin, nu ne predica cum să trăim!

Toți cetățenii sunt egali în fața legii - scrie în Constituție. Dar Biserica neagă dreptul persoanelor de același sex de a forma un cuplu prin parteneriat civil sau de a se căsători. Popi transfobi și homofobi, iubirea noastră nu e treaba voastră!

Tinerii au dreptul la educație privind sănătatea reproductivă și sexuală, dar Biserica se opune vehement introducerii orelor de educația sexuală în școli, accesului tinerilor la informații despre corpurile lor, și afirmă că numărul mare de sarcini la adolescente este doar problema fetelor rome care fac prea mulți copii. Înalte fețe ale BOR, lăsați tinerii să învețe despre corpurile lor!

Femeile, indiferent de clasa, etnia, religia sau zona geografică din care provin, au dreptul la întrerupere de sarcină în siguranță, gratuit și accesibil, dar Biserica spune că avortul este o crimă și descurajează utilizarea contraceptivelor. Patriarhul a oferit medalii unor medici ginecologi care refuză accesul femeilor la întreruperi de sarcină în spitale publice. Bărbați în sutane, nu vă privesc deciziile noastre despre avort, pilule și tampoane!

Indignare în Franța pentru acordarea premiului César regizorului Roman Polanski, acuzat în Statele Unite pentru violul unei fete de 13 ani.

"Fie în Adunarea Națională, fie în cultură, voi, cei puternici, cereți un respect deplin și constant. Acest lucru se aplică violului, abuzurilor poliției, premiilor Cesar, reformei dumneavoastră de pensii. Ca bonus, aveți nevoie de tăcerea victimelor.

Voi începe așa: fiți siguri, voi cei puternici, șefii, boșii, voi capetele mari, lucrurile astea dor. Oricât de bine v-am cunoaște, de oricâte ori ne-am fi lovit de puterea voastră si am simțit-o pe propria piele, doare la fel de fiecare data. Tot weekendul acesta v-am ascultat scâncind și bocind, plângându-vă că sunteti obligati sa treceti legea pensiilor prin OUG și că nu vă lăsam sa-l sarbatoriti pe Polanski în liniște și că va stricăm petrecerea, dar în spatele falselor lacrimi, vă vedem, nu vă faceți griji: vă auzim jubiland pentru ceea ce sunteți, șefi adevărați, patroni, caizi si am înțeles mesajul : această noțiune de consimțământ nu intenționați să o lăsați să treacă.

Unde ar mai fi distracția de a face parte din clanul celor puternici dacă ar trebui să ții cont de consimțământul celor dominați? Și cu siguranță nu sunt singura careia îi vine să urle de furie și neputință în fața frumoasei demonstrații de forță, cu siguranță nu singura a mă simți murdărită la vederea orgiei de nedreptate și de impunitate.

Nu este nimic surprinzător in faptul că Academia César îl alege pe Roman Polanski cel mai bun regizor al anului 2020. Este grotesc, este insultant, este dezastruos, dar nu este surprinzător. Când dai unui tip un buget de 25 de milioane pentru a face un film TV, mesajul este în buget.

Dacă lupta împotriva antisemitismului ar interesa cinematografia franceză, s-ar vedea. Pe de altă parte, vocea celor asupriți care-si spun povestea calvarului lor, va plictiseste, am vazut.

Așadar, când ați auzit despre această comparație subtilă între problema unui cineast sicanat de o sută de feministe în fața a trei cinematografe și Dreyfus, victimă a antisemitismului francez de la sfârșitul secolului trecut, ați sesizat imediat oportunitatea. Douăzeci și cinci de milioane pentru această paralelă. Superb. Să ii aplaudăm pe investitori, deoarece pentru a aduna o asemenea sumă, toată lumea a trebuit să joace jocul: distribuția Gaumont, creditele, France 2, France 3, OCS, Canal +, RAI ... cu toții ați băgat mâna în buzunar cu generozitate. Ați strâns rândurile ca să-l apărati pe unul de-al vostru. Cei puternici își apără prerogativele: e una dintre trăsăturile voastre de eleganță, violul este chiar o componentă de stil.
Legea vă acoperă, instanțele sunt domeniul vostru, media vă aparține.

Not much has changed since July 2019, although we had expected the authorities to react quickly in the aftermath of the Caracal case. 2020 began with the scandal of the National Liberal Party (PNL) mayor who raped two trafficked minors. One of the girls attempted suicide because of the trauma. Nothing happened to the mayor, and politicians did not publicly take a stance against the violence to which girls and women are subjected to in this country. How much longer are we going to hide and overlook this painful reality that women are forced to live in day by day?

Violence against women is still silently or explicitly accepted, both institutionally and within society at large. Statistics for Romania show that one out of four murders take place within the family, around half of the citizens believe that rape can be justified in certain circumstances, and 30% of women say that they were victims of physical or sexual violence at some point in their lives, after the age of 15. Around 81% of cases of violence occur at home - both in rural areas (53%) and within cities (47%). Also, in 81% of the cases, violence victims are women, and in 92% of the cases the aggressors are men. One out of four women in Romania was physically or sexually assaulted by their partner. However, only 4% of sexual violence acts end up in court. In addition, Romania is one of the main countries of origin of victims of human trafficking in Europe, often with the complicity of the authorities.

In solidarity with our sisters around the world, we have organized the flashmob "The rapist is YOU" in Romania, to show, once again, that sexism and violence against women are normalized in all patriarchal societies, from East to West, and are NOT a sign of Romanian exceptionalism, "uncivilization" or “backwardness”. The flashmob was also performed in both Romanian and Romani languages, to draw attention to the fact that Roma women in Romania face sexism and racism from authorities and society, and are doubly affected by this racist-misogynistic systemic violence.

We came together as a feminist collective and created the #CadeUnaCademToate (#IfOneFallsWeAllFall) movement, in solidarity with the wider intersectional feminist movement - #NiUnaMenos, and with other similar initiatives in Europe, Latin America, the US and beyond, fighting for women's rights, regardless of color, nationality or sexual orientation.
